What is a ASKard? 

ASKard (noun): A non-screen production credit also knowed by "minhas calinadas". Is a non-negotiable truth a clear "source code" of my personal philosophy.  Is a surgical "verbal grenade" designed to terminate low-value dialogue. It is a high-impact, non-screen production credit that acts as a cognitive kill-switch when a conversation yields zero "non-profit participatory" value.  It’s the "ard" in ASKard. It’s hard, it’s final, and it’s my .!. .!. 

Here I am, in your past, so that you may be there, in your present, reading me in your future.

• WIP • With four decades of following the evolutionary progress of technology, I witness a subtle yet significant transformation that few notice or simply care to acknowledge: the disappearance of 'Portuguese' as our mother tongue. When I see 'Portuguese' and 'Portuguese (Portugal)' in new language options or during new installation setups, I feel that our origin has been diluted. In truth, the language we took around the world should be the default 'Portuguese' reference, with the Brazilian variant being 'Portuguese (Brazil)'. I'd be willing to bet you hadn't even noticed... But this is just my humble opinion, which I have written about in the past in the 🍬 braincandy column, along with countless other things.

• WIP • I view technology as a body that grew too fast for the human soul to keep up. Technology gave us the tools to communicate instantly, but it didn't teach us to be more empathetic. It gave us access to all information, but it didn't teach us to be wiser. We continue to operate with the same primitive instincts as always, just with more sophisticated toys. The disparity between technological evolution and our own social and emotional evolution is, perhaps, the greatest challenge of our era.

• WIP •  It's obvious to almost everyone that we've lost control, even over something as basic as our logins. Whether access is tied into Windows or the browser, the surveillance is pervasive. A VPN might offer a little privacy for 'surfing,' but the core control mechanisms remain, simply shifting from one form to another. I believe users have forfeited fundamental rights that are unlikely ever to be recovered. The only thing more disturbing than the loss of these rights is the public's eagerness to surrender them, a complacency I refuse to share. I have the right to my own privacy everywhere, and that right doesn't diminish just because others are willing to give theirs up. 

⚠️ 🔥 Vaga de calor incomum (Portugal | Espanha)

Olá a todos!

Como tenho vindo a dizer, vem aí (aproxima-se) uma vaga de calor incomum forte (11 a 19 de Jun) e, nesta fase das nossas vidas (meia idade, falo por mim), "prevenir é melhor do que remediar". Às vezes pensamos que isto "só acontece aos outros", mas o nosso corpo não é de ferro e merece atenção especial nestes dias.

Para passarmos estes dias com mais conforto e segurança, deixo aqui um pequeno lembrete:

• Hidratação é a regra de ouro: Não esperem ter sede para beber água. Bebam pequenos golos ao longo do dia.

• O "refúgio" das horas críticas: Entre as 12h e as 17h, se possível, evitem a exposição direta ao sol e esforços desnecessários.

• Arrefecimento "à moda antiga": Se sentirem o calor a apertar, recorram aos métodos naturais que sempre funcionaram:

  • Banhos de água morna ou fresca: Não precisa de ser gelada (o choque pode não ser bom), mas uma duche para refrescar faz milagres.

  • Água no corpo: Se puderem, nadem! É o melhor exercício e o melhor arrefecimento.

  • Momentos de lazer: Aproveitem para "brincar" e socializar em ambientes frescos, à sombra ou dentro de água. O convívio e a diversão são, por si só, uma forma de relaxar o organismo.

Vamos manter-nos atentos uns aos outros. Se souberem de algum amigo ou vizinho que vive sozinho, façam um telefonema, um toque à porta, só para saber se está tudo bem.

The irony is that, by trying to buy 'experience' with cheap fixes, they have destroyed access to the only thing that was free and kept us grounded in reality: our own capacity to figure things out and exist without the need for mediation.
