#SecretScoop Despite the extreme precision and power required to fly a modern jet, the F-16 pilot's flight control stick isn't in the center like a classic plane, but off to the side—and the original 'fly-by-wire' design had the stick barely move at all, which the pilots hated, forcing engineers to add a tiny bit of feedback movement so they knew they were actually controlling the multi-million dollar, Mach 2 jet and not just playing a fancy videogame... SLAP! (Of reality, that is)."

What you can learn (The extra technical detail): The original F-16 stick was almost completely fixed and relied on pressure sensors to tell the flight control computer what the pilot wanted to do. This is called a "force-sensing side-stick." The pilots felt disconnected, so a slight amount of physical movement was added back in, but it's still far less than a classic center stick. This design choice, along with the reclined seat, was made to help the pilot withstand massive G-forces—by having their arm anchored on an armrest during high-G maneuvers, they can operate the controls easier than fighting against the forces with an unanchored center stick.
